Understanding COVID-19 PCR Testing

According to the CDC, the PCR test is one of two types of COVID-19 diagnostic tests (the other is the Antigen test). The PCR test is a Molecular test that detect the virus's genetic material.

BioFire

Biofire respiratory pathogen panel PCR. The BioFire identifies 22 of the most common viral and bacterial organisms associated with upper respiratory infection, including SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.  The sample is obtained via a nasopharyngeal swab.

When supplies are available, we offer COVID-19 Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) test. This test detects RNA (or genetic material) that is specific to the SARS-CoV-2 virus and can detect the virus within days of infection, even those who have no symptoms. GS Labs is using two systems that check a full respiratory pathogen panel looking for multiple viruses and bacteria. The BioFire system has a 22-pathogen panel and the Genmark ePlex system has a 20-pathogen panel. The PCR technology is the most accurate method of testing for COVID-19.

EPLEX

Genmark ePlex respiratory pathogen panel PCR.  The Genmark ePlex identifies 21 of the most common viral and bacterial organisms associated with upper respiratory infection, including SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.  The sample is obtained via a nasopharyngeal swab.
